Christmas

So, here's the skinny. Jeremy's cousin, Casey, and his girlfriend Terah are here for 2 weeks. They went with Jeremy and 3 guys from our church tramping across the coromandel. They loved it. Jeremy came home with loads of blisters and swollen ankles and feet. Poor thing. We also have had them wondering the city and had dinner at the sky tower on wednesday. the previous wednesday, the day before their camping trip, we celebrated terah's birthday at muriwai having pizza. we watched the sunset, which was cool. plus, it was really really windy. it was the best black sand pizza ever! we're having a nice day today, Christmas! i made cinnamon rolls, pumpkin pie, and pavlova for today. we're grilling out for dinner tonight. it's a beautiful day. we're in shorts and hanging out watching past offices that casey and terah haven't seen. pictures will hopefully follow soon.

Survivor

Not only can I say I know a person on Survivor, I can now say, I know the winner of Survivor. Crazy...

Hmmm...

I have time to post something...and I have nothing to post. I am working my bum off. I have most of our training prepared. We have no idea when we're going to do it. We have a meeting with the others in charge of different databases in early December. I think we're the furthest along. Yea me! It may have something to do the fact that I haven't been given too many responsibilities yet. My time will come, I'm sure.

Jeremy's cousin, Casey, and his girlfriend, Terah, are coming for Christmas. Jeremy has big plans to do a big tramping/camping trip. They will be gone 6 days. They're going to the Coromandel, like we did with Brook and Mike. They're ferrying over to that peninsula and bussing anything they're not walking. I have to have the car for work, so it only makes sense.

New show I enjoy: Glee. I find it humorous. Of course, it's cheesy, but it's still good. Any thoughts?

We're doing Thanksgiving on Friday night with a bunch of Americans and few kiwis in West Auckland. We're looking forward to it. Speaking of Thanksgiving, we have been here for 1 year this week. Yea! We still love it and don't regret doing it.

Update

Ok, Tim. Here is your update. :-)

I have now been working for 3 weeks. I have done most of my computer system training. I have yet to read the policy book. It is expected to be done on your own. Turns out, no one has actually read the whole thing, just bits they need to know now and then. Funny. I will read it...at some point. I've been too busy to read anything out of it so far. I've already been asked to train others. I'm going to be training my branch on some databases...and maybe other branches too. I'm pretty excited about this. I like training. My "buddy" (person in charge of my training) is going to be putting in a word about me liking training and having experience to the people who do the software training for the library system. So, we'll see what happens with this. By the first Saturday, my energy finally kicked back into gear. Most days I do pretty good. Two things I've remembered..no...unhappy about..maybe...anyhow, not sure about the feeling, but two things. 1. My nails/cuticles/hands aren't too thrilled about me working again. 2. I can't count the number of people mad at me (or rather the library system in general), but they don't outweigh the people that love me and my help. :-)

On another note. Mom is here. She's been here for 1 week now. 3 more to go. We're going to Christchurch on Sunday-Wednesday. This will be fun. Hopefully, pics to follow soon.

New Day

Today was the first day of my new job. I am tired. :-) It's going to be cool once I learn things. I really hate say, "I don't know. This is my first day. Let's ask this gentleman/lady." Soon enough, I will know things. I actually go for training on the computer system next week. That makes things more fun.

Time change has already happened here, so we're 6 hours apart now. When yours changes in Nov, we'll be 5 hours.

Hats

So, I keep forgetting to put up pics of the hats I make. Here's the turban I made for Shana. This isn't the actual one I made. Mine was tan, but you get the idea.

These are the 4 caps I just made this weekend. They're for those who signed up on my "Made By Me" note on facebook. So, if any of you are reading this, you get to see these before you get it (since it takes a week to get there), but you don't know which one's yours. :-)

I am now onto starting Bobby and Lisa's baby blanket. It's pink and cream. I start work next Tuesday, so I'm hoping to get a lot done before then. I've loved looking at patterns for this and the new patterns Rebecca, Jer's sister, sent me. Thanks Rebecca!! Truly, I loved them and am looking forward to sharing them with my friend Callie here.

In other news, after I posted about my birthday, I had another party. It was a surprise. On Wednesday night, Jeremy had the young adult group do a birthday surprise for me before the lesson. He had bought me flowers. I got a beautiful white bouquet of star-gazer lillies, roses, and other fragrant stock flowers. It's so nice!! The smart man he is, even took our vase from home to the florist so he didn't have to buy another one!! I love him. He also bought a scarf to go around the vase, so I have a new scarf too when it's done on the vase. Everyone at the party had paper masques on and pulled poppers w/confetti when I came it the door. It was great! I loved it! Lael, our new intern girl, even made me an apple cake. We had lasagna with as well, along with my puddin' wiches that I had brought with me not knowing about the cake. While everyone else had paper masques, Jer had bought me a special plastic one that is purple and decorated nicely. Now, I have a cool masque for any other occasion.

Happy Birthday to me!

I have had a good 28th birthday. I woke up to my job offer being delivered (along with other paperwork) to my door. Now, if that isn't a good start to a day, I don't know what is! I chatted with Eric for quite a while not long after that. Then after some church work stuff, I came home and didn't do much until Jer and I went out. I decided I wanted steak. We went to the Angus Steak House. They have a "buffet" of uncooked meat that you can choose from and get cooked how you like. Nothing was small. I think the smallest chunk was around 12-15 oz. It was really good though! When they found out we were from around Texas, they asked us how they did. Apparently, Texas is known even here for steak. :-) After that, we went to see The Ugly Truth.It is quite a crude movie. Just to warn you. I have gotten several cards and lots of birthday wishes on facebook. Corin even colored a page for me. :-)

So, legislation passed with enough budget for the Philadelphia libraries and other staff that could have been laid off. So, that's good!

Let's see what else is going on....

James, Anne Darby's cousin, is staying with us. He's trying to get a landscape architecture job here. He's been here for 2 weeks now. We have a new intern at church from ACU. Her name is Lael. She'll be here until December, so that's cool. Generally, interns come during our winter, so it'll be nice to have one here for spring/summer to do things.

We went to a Japanese festival yesterday. That was fun. We had several new things we'd never had before. James and I painted a word/character. He did "friend" and I did "flower". Our work is on the frig. :-) Jeremy did origami, of course. We also watched some Japanese archery. After that, we took James to One Tree Hill. Too bad it was cloudy and rainy, but it was good none the less.

I've been making big plans for when mom comes to see me in a few weeks. We're planning a trip to Christchurch over Labour Day weekend. (notice the spelling?)

Leslie asked for the website for the library I'll be working for. http://www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz. This is for all the Manukau libraries. Mine is the Botany one. There's only a tiny pic of it. The site just changed, so I've been trying to look through it.

Corin has hit the "NO!" phase. Needless to say, it's fun in our house right now.

Library Closings

So, unless something happens between now and Oct 2nd, all Philadelphia libraries will be closed until further notice on Oct. 2nd. This is due to lack of funds to operate. I don't know about you, but this makes me sad. There are over 50 branches in this area...all closed. Job Offer Job Offer

I have a job offer!!!

I have been offered a library assistant position at the Botany library in Manukau. It's a retail library and looks fabulous. I'm pretty excited about this job. I start Oct. 6. I could have started a week earlier, but decided to wait since I've been doing a lot of work for the church. This gives me a month to do any big projects before I start. Yea!!!

Here is the granola recipe I've been making for breakfast. It's yummy. It originally called for raisins, but i prefer cranberries. :-) The message at the bottom is from the program I use for my recipes on my computer.

Great Granola

Ingredients

1. 1/4 cup oil
2. 3/4 cup honey
3. 1/4 cup maple syrup
4. 3 cups rolled oats
5. 1/2 cup shredded coconut, optional
6. 2 tbsp wheat germ, optional
7. 1/2 cup sesame seeds
8. 3/4 cup chopped, unsalted nuts (pecans, filberts, walnuts, or almonds)
9. 1 tsp cinnamon
10. 1 tsp vanilla
11. 1/2 cup dried cranberries

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350˚F
2. Combine oil, honey, and maple syrup in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients, except cranberries, and mix well. Spread mixture on a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, or until toasted, stirring occasionally.
3. Sir in cranberries. Let cool, stirring with a fork occasionally to break up mixture. Store in airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Elliptical

These are pics of my new (used) elliptical machine. Ok, i didn't take the pics. I stole them from trademe, where i bought it. this is the beginning of my new exercise routine. i did 15 mins on it tonight. my knees were only mad at me for the first 8.5 mins. i thought that funny since it's supposed to be low impact on your knees. maybe it is compared to running, but i don't run for several reasons. one of which is our hills. lots and lots of hills. ask brook, i'm not kidding.

So, my friend Daniel Lawson posted a link to the "Funniest email forward ever". I saw this one and immediately thought Tim should try and answer this one for us.

My 4-year old son asked me in the car the other day “Dad what would happen if you ran over a ninja?” How do I respond to that?

First project

This is the first crochet project I did. Ok, the matching scarf was first, but it wasn't sitting here. You can imagine the scarf from the hat. Jer loves his new hat and scarf! I would post pics of the two sets I did after this for Shana, but they were mailed immediately for her use. I'm working on a chic turban for her now, but it's knitted. It'll take me a while. Hopefully, I'll take a pic of that one.

6 years

Happy 6 years anniversary to us...yesterday. We didn't do anything special this year. Church, lunch with friends, watch Season 2 of Battlestar Galactica. Jer wanted to take me out for dinner, but I wasn't hungry enough to eat out.

I've been crocheting up a storm to get some hats done for my friend Shana who is undergoing chemo and recently shaved her head.

My nephew Myles Corbin was born this week. We're pretty excited to talk to them today online.

Random

So, not much has been going on lately, which is nice. So I'm not sure I have much interesting things to talk about, but here goes.

1. They have little to no options for low-fat cheeses. There is one called "light" which is a light cheddar. The only other options are low-fat cheese slices. We rarely buy slices...and I need the cheese to be in blocks or shredded or something!!

2. I could not find applesauce at the store last week. I mean seriously, applesauce! Turns out I need to look in the sauces section (I thought I did) not the fruit section. Many make their own too. I might do that instead.

3. I have taught myself to crochet. I have made my first scarf. Much faster than knitting, which I knew it would be, but I'm learning to hold my yarn in my left hand, which I was needing to learn to do for some of my knitting. :-) The first bit of the scarf it quite awful, but it gets better and you don't notice that bobbles that much. Over all, not bad for a first project. Next, a matching hat....

4. We have found a reputable store to sell dry black beans. I say reputable b/c the beans are in a pre-sealed bag. Not like the chinese market store that has them in ziplock baggies with words written with a sharpie like they bought a giant bag and divvied them up. The Chinese store is cool for some things...but others are a little iffy, and you have to be careful of what comes from China here. It's not monitored like it is in the States. There was a whole baby milk debacle not too long ago you might have heard about. It was sad.

PCOS

So, I've been tested and diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). You may think, "why are you telling us this?" well, mostly i don't care if people know. plus, this is apparently a common thing, and i had never heard of it. it's possible you haven't either, so i'm going to share some facts about it. it is the most common hormone imbalance in women of childbearing age. roughly 1 in 10 American women are affected by it. with this condition, you are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. many women with PCOS are overweight and insulin resistant.

Symptoms include:

• irregular periods
• excessive hair growth on face and body
• scalp hair thinning
• acne
• excess weight, sugar craving, and inability to lose weight
• darkening of skin areas, esp. on nape of neck
• skin tags
• gray-white breast discharge
• sleep apnea
• pelvic pain
• depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other emotional disorders
• hot flashes before menopause
• high blood pressure

there is controversy over all the causes, but included is heredity. there are also several different options for treatment, including but not limited to Metformin (diabetes med), special contraceptive, diet and exercise.

what does this mean for me? well, i have several of those symptoms to contend with. we've decided to go with the Metformin along with the new diet and exercise. all my research has shown that the diet generally follows a low GI (glycemic index) diet. this has been interesting to research. many online seem to think you just follow any low GI foods. that'd be silly as some are high fat. so, the smartest advise i think i've found is to follow low GI but not at the expense of high fat food. also, don't never eat high GI foods, just do it like twice a month rather than daily. luckily, we're mostly following this for Jer's low sat. fat, low cholesterol diet anyhow. just a few changes. hopefully i'll be able to make myself keep up the exercise too. :-)

Random awesome note: 1/2 tsp cinnamon a day can help stabilize your blood sugar.

Last trip days

We spent the 3rd day hiking around. The boys did more hiking than Brook and I. We did a little hiking and went to some pottery places and a cafe. The 4th day was spent driving home. We stopped at the once best fish and chips on our way home. We decided the best is still down the street from us. :-) We stayed at the greatest backpackers place. It was nicer than some hotels we've been in. We managed a room with it's own kitchen and bath. It was great! And on the beach! That night we went to a local brewery/restaurant in Auckland. Today we went to Rangitoto Island. It's the youngest volcano in New Zealand. It's only roughly 600 years old. It is currently considered "dead". This is a picture of us on the island looking over the city. Tomorrow night, the Abrams leave us. We are spending tonight and tomorrow relaxing watching Lord of the Rings extended edition. It is in honor of the south island that we were not able to visit. :-)

We took about a million pictures at Cathedral Cove. These are but a few of them. This is where we spent our 2nd afternoon. Afterward we went to an art gallery and had dinner at a pub while we waited to be able to go to Hot Water Beach. This is where you dig in the sand to make a small hot pool while the tide is out. We were the only ones there as it was dark and cold. I didn't do much other than hold the flash light. I also just stuck my feet in. I didn't wallow in it like the others. I also didn't end up with sand everywhere!! It was too dark and rainy for pictures.

Piha and Beginning of Trip

After our camping/cave trip, we spent a couple of days doing laundry and general hanging out at the house. Jeremy did have to work after all. This first picture is Brook and Mike at KiteKite Falls at Piha beach. (Key tay key tay is the pronunciation of that word)

Our first adventure after we leave on our 4-day trip is to Waitomo (why toe moe). We went black water toobing. That's how they spell it b/c it's in a tire inner tube, and it also isn't like white water tubing in that the waters are not fast and rapids-ridden in caves. Anyhow, we suit up in already wet wetsuits, gumboots, and helmets w/lights. We were quite lovely, as I am sure you can imagine. Glamorous as some might say. Part of the cave is walking and climbing through sharp rocks, while other parts are swimming and toobing. The water was FREEZING. We got to see glowworms and see different cave things. :-) Brook and I agreed that the water was really cold, but it was worst on our collarbones. I did manage to fall once, but luckily I only hit my knee. Oh! By the way, we did have to walk a kilometer or so across a muddy pasture in our wetsuits. I felt like a penguin waddling across the field! No pictures were allowed for various reasons, and we didn't buy the ones they took for us. So, sad you don't get to see our gorgeousness. :-) This next pic is just along the road towards the Coromandel Peninsula.

So, Sunday, we went to church then to Waiwera hot pools. Then after dark, we set up camp in Urititi Beach. Yes, we went camping in winter. Needless to say, I wasn't really for it, but whatever. Turns out we had a beautiful night. These pics are of the morning. We all froze minus Jeremy. He had the only warm sleeping bag apparently. We even attached mine to Jeremy's and I froze. Sheesh!

Saturday

Yes, Rebecca. It is very difficult to keep 2 adults who want to sleep awake for 12 more hours w/o constantly running.

So, today was a great wet day! I think everyone of us can attest to this. The morning went as planned...Brook and I running errands while Jeremy worked. Then we went to the tree adventures. It was raining so much today, that they called to make sure we were coming b/c a lot of people were canceling. We went. It wasn't raining too bad while we were in the trees. We did get very wet though. Brook is gets the highest grade on a job well done at the end for attempting the hard stuff when the rest of us were too tired, so we just zip lined thru the last bits. :-) Afterward, we drove to the pizza place. I decided I could take them to the beaches later when it wasn't raining and miserable. We had to change clothes in the public bathroom near the pizza place. That was an interesting feat, not just changing in what could be compared to a rest stop toilet, but getting back to the car w/o getting our dry clothes wet from the rain. The pizza was great. We all loved it. Then we made a stop by a restaurant/brewery for dessert and for the Abrams to try this NZ beer. Everyone agreed the desserts were fabulous. They had chocolate fondue, while we had Lime Coconut Tart. Yum!! Then we came home, all loud and happy and full to wash clothes and pack for tomorrow. More adventures to come....

So far...

Tuesday:

1. wake up early to pick up Brook and Mike about 6:45, only to find out they've been waiting for me for like 45 mins. i timed it like when jeremy kemps family came b/c they took the same flight. turns out, they didn't have to wait in any lines this time and went through customs quickly.

2. take them to McD's for 2nd breakfast (1st being on the plane) and waiting for sun to come up for our next thing

3. go to One Tree Hill to look over city and kill some time and hopefully keep them awake.

4. go home for 3rd breakfast. (i think they felt like hobbits by this point), then take a walk to the beach. showers might have come in after that

5. go to the grocery store.

6. do anything possible to keep them awake until 8pm, when i told them they could go to bed. that was quite a feat!

Wed

2. went to the auckland museum for a few hours, then to a local brewery. brook and mike tried a sampler of 8? different beers. i tried one and decided that i could drink it if my life depended on it, but i still didn't like it. they said it was more like a wine than beer...not sure how that works, but it's true.

1. brook, mike and i bussed into the city for some shopping and lunch at the sky tower while jeremy stayed home and worked. lots of walking...all on hills. that's what we have.

tomorrow is supposed to be jer working in the morning, while brook and i go the grocery store. that afternoon, we're going to do some tree adventure ropes courses. we're pretty excited about that. possibly afterward, we're going to hit muriwai beach for sunset, and our fav. pizzaria on the way home.

1st Visitors!!

It's currently 8:30 pm, Monday here. In about 10 hours, Brook and Mike will be here!! They are Jeremy and my first official visitors from the states. I say first b/c the first was Jeremy Kemp's parents and the 2nd was the church intern. They don't count towards the first people to come specifically to see us. So, yea!! We're totally stoked and know we'll have a good time. If I don't post, it's b/c we're too busy running around see things and hanging out. :-) I'm sure pictures will follow soon.

Party

Today is July 4th. We decided to have a BBQ. It's not just American's either. Although, there will be quite a few. We pretty much invited the whole church and anyone else we've met. Hopefully, I'll remember to take pics.

Hostage situation

Jer left his shampoo at family camp this weekend. Luckily our friends, Nate and Rach, live there and Nate is the Camp Director. We emailed him today about leaving it up there and asked if he'd bring it back down with them this weekend. This is the photo with randsom note we got back. The note read "I have your lush soap in my custody please don't call the police, leave the ransom money in the designated area or the soap gets it!!"

Corin stories

So, last night the four of us were downstairs practicing singing a couple of songs for the talent night portion of the family camp. One song is all four of us, the other is just Leslie and I. Anyhow, we mostly practiced the one for all four of us. In the process we had 2 cute Corin moments.

1. Corin is pretty good at hearing a note either on pitch pipe or you humming it and repeating the note. It was pretty great. He's better at the low ones rather than high ones right now. It was pretty fun to discover though!

2. We sang the one song so many times, that Corin actually put his fingers in his ears at one point and walked around the room this way. Remember his is 12 months now. It was quite cute and humorous. We called it quits for the night shortly after this.

Van iPhone Trade

2 interesting things

Right now, it is 10pm Monday night here. Two crazy things. One happened today. We're at KareKare (Carrie Carrie is the pronounciation) today to see the beach and a waterfall. We take Leslie, Corin, Will (the intern), and Casey Marlar (teenager i've mentioned before who family is from texas). We borrow the Marlar's minivan to go b/c our car isn't big enough and the whole family had plans to go along with 2 other friends, but that fell through. So, we're at the beach and are walking back to go to the trail to the waterfall and decide to stop by the van for something. Casey sees that it's been broken into. At first noone understands, and then we all panic. Mine and Leslie's purses are in there (including mine and Jeremy's passports) along with phones and ipods. Not a good situation. Then to discover they busted out the front passenger window and just grabbed what they could, which was Casey's bag (with extra clothes, wallet, phone, and ipod) and the diaper bag. We decide to forgo the waterfall walk. We walk all over the area and talk to several people. We didn't find any signs of our stuff chucked out or anything. While looking, Leslie notices one house nearby has small children. We knocked on their door and they graciously gave us a diaper and wipes for Corin. He was wet and we weren't looking forward to a long drive home when he was already wet. After the majority of the glass is cleaned out of the car, we start our drive back sans window. Luckily it wasn't raining. We decide to drive not the way out for a bit to see if the stuff was thrown out the window that way. It wasn't, but we could see the waterfall from the road. So, at least we got to see it. On the way out, we did find Casey's bag and his clothes, but that's it. We really thought we'd find the diaper bag once they realized that's what it was. It doesn't look like a diaper bag at first sight. It looks like a messenger bag, so they might have thought it held a laptop or something. I'm praising God that nothing was stolen that is terribly hard to replace.

2nd crazy thing goes down tomorrow. Colin and Andre'a are a couple of young Americans that were here on a working holiday visa for not quite a year. They go home tomorrow. They haven't been able to sell their van. They haven't had much time. Jeremy and Colin have decided to do a swap of the van for Jeremy's iphone. Now, out of contract iphones are worth a lot and vans here aren't too expensive. But if we can sell it, we are making a profit. I'm just surprised Jer's doing it since the iphone has been his new baby since he had to leave the miada behind. He LOVES his iphone. Anyhow, it's his phone, and can do with it what he wants. Waiwera Hot Pools

So, Monday, we went to Waiwera to the hot pools. it was very nice and relaxing. We went into several different temperature pools. one was 48 celsius(118 F). i didn't try that one. several other people in our group did though, including jeremy. he didn't get much farther than his foot. :-) we watched a few others do it for pictures, which was pretty dumb. they also have a number of slides. that was pretty cool too. the only problem was getting out of the water and wondering around in the cold before you go to the next one. luckily, it's not a busy time right now, so we were able to hang out in the little pool at the bottom waiting for the rest of our group before we had to get out. we had to practically beg several times to get a lifeguard to come out and open the 2 slides that required one. i think he just didn't want to work. he didn't have to do much and he was wearing warm clothes. he looked grumpy. we had a lot of fun though. i did taste sulfur for 2 days after though!

This is at the cool movie theatre just north of us that we went to for Jeremy's birthday movies. The seats are fancy schmancy. They're wide and soft with great cup holders and arm rests. They're built for people just taller than me, in the head rest area, but once you get into the movie, you forget about it.
